Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

Atlantic Salmon is considered the greatest prize of all to many freshwater anglers. Atlantic Salmon have dark steely coloured backs with bright silver flanks occassionally tinged with purple. Their bodies are strong muscular and streamlined with a pointed tail. Atlantic Salmon are anadromous - living and feeding at sea but returning to freshwater to spawn. Salmon do not feed in the rivers and lochs creating a challenge for the angler to create that old feeling of hunger to well up inside the fish. Salmon can be caught on flies and spinners but water conditions need to be good to strike successfully.

Season:	January to November depending on the river.
Distribution:	Far North Hemisphere from the USA to Canada, Northern Europe, Scandinavia and Russia.
Diet:	Does not feed in fresh water
